The Marketing and Communications Manager is responsible for overseeing the marketing and communications programs for the Department of Surgery. This includes writing, editing, content development, digital, web development, media relations and, frequently, project management, depending on area assigned. This individual works collaboratively with other department staff and organizes/works with cross-disciplinary teams to achieve Department-wide and Institutional priorities. The Manager may be a part of the Executive Marketing Committee, joining with Directors or senior leadership in developing/updating the department’s strategic marketing/communications plan. The Marketing and Communications Manager works closely with faculty and staff in the Department of Surgery and colleagues in central marketing and communications with the overarching goal of enhancing reputation for its clinical, research, and educational excellence.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Work with the Vice Chair and Surgeon-in-Chief to identify reputation building opportunities for the Department of Surgery. Act as the day-to-day contact within the Department including partnering with Operations, Faculty and the Central Marketing and Communications team to identify reputational needs and opportunities. Creates and approves content; manages ongoing campaign; tracks and reports on success, measuring KPIs and ROI.
- Activities may include developing content (print collateral, specialty reports, B2B outreach, internal/external messaging, video content, photography, social media posts), working with outside vendors and internal communications in central marketing to distribute to internal and external audiences.
- Develops and maintains all web site and social media content, ensuring that the tone and language are consistent, accessible, and straightforward.
- Develops and pitches new ideas, stories, and/or press releases to the media via Central Marketing and Communications Department.
- Work across administrative and functional entities located within Central Marketing and Communications to oversee projects from inception through deployment including identifying schedules and timelines, estimating budget, and plans for project implementation. Responsible for documenting project scopes and deliverables, developing project plans/schedules, preparing budgets, planning and allocating resources, monitoring progress and keeping stakeholders informed throughout the lifecycle of reputation-based projects.
- Performs staff management functions including hiring, training, and performance evaluation of one full-time employee.
- Manages the online reputation of full-time faculty and the Department overall; creates original video content to boost online reputation and search results.
- Manages the annual effort to boost reputation and ranking on Doximity for the Best Residency and Best Hospital voting. Responsible for creating new ways to help boost ranking each year.
- Attends the American College of Surgeons annual congress to cover and promote Department’s work on a national level. Attend other conferences as required.
- Responsible for conceptualizing, pitching, writing, editing, publishing, and distributing the departmental Annual Report, as needed.
- Works with other Directors to ensure brand standards and reputation are maintained throughout a patient’s journey. Troubleshoot any communication related issues that arise and provide new solutions to improve the patient experience.
- Advises Vice Chair of issues or new opportunities related to department marketing activities and recommends solutions as appropriate.
- Develops standardized internal marketing and communications policies and procedures as necessary, based on Central Marketing procedures and style guides.
- Oversees the general branding for the department to ensure consistent brand and reputation remain in good standing.
- Manages departmental marketing budget.
- Prepares bi-annual media coverage reports for the department.
- Ensure that use of logo and other visuals are appropriate and compliant by providing non-marketing staff with templates and guidelines, and by reviewing drafts of content and planned purchases branded items.
- Report project outcomes and/or risks to the appropriate management channels as needed—escalating issues as necessary based on project work plans
- Oversees employee engagement endeavors including the Employee Appreciation Committee
- Manages departmental events as necessary
- Performs other duties as required, in support of the Department’s reputation-enhancing activities.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Communications and/or Marketing or a related field.
- 5-7 years of experience working cross functionally across a large, complex environment. Experience in a healthcare or academic setting preferred but will consider applicants that have worked with healthcare and/or academic clients in an agency environment.
- Ideally has experience managing others.
- Experience developing integrated marketing communications programs and campaigns including utilization of all digital channels.
- Experience working with multiple stakeholders; client service oriented with ability to partner with stakeholders toward solutions.
- Collaborative, strong communicator and listener with sensitivity to multiple styles and perspectives; able to build and foster strong relationships with diverse constituencies.
- Ability to work independently, shift gears quickly when needed, and hit tight deadlines while valuing collaboration and working with others to accomplish goals.
